Human Rights of Roma in Times of COVID-19
Tuesday, 26.05.2020, 11h-13h (CEST)
Roma communities across Europe are particularly vulnerable to the effects of COVID-19. Already before the outbreak of COVID-19, people with Romani background suffered from extreme poverty, segregation and racism. In the current pandemic, Romani settlements with people living in confined spaces without access to clean water and medical care risk becoming hotspots for the epidemic. At the same time, Roma in a number of European countries are made scapegoats for the COVID-19 epidemic and are currently facing hate speech, ethnicized emergency measures and racist violence.
The Alliance for Solidarity with the Sinti and Roma of Europe calls with the campaign #Act4RomaLives on the governments and local authorities to put an end to these unbearable human rights violations and act against such violence and hate speech. Furthermore, there is an urgent need for a safe provision of food, water, medical products and information material.
We want to mobilise organisations and individuals across Europe to join our network of self-organisations and political activists to…
...exchange information on the situation in the region and the most urgent needs
...become part of a platform for action against antigypsyism and Roma segregation
...develop new ideas for action
...gather resources in our common fight
